Washi Tape Buyer's Guide: How to Choose the Right Set

Everything you need to know before buying — materials, widths, themes, roll counts and how to match sets to your creative projects.

Washi tape is a decorative adhesive tape made from traditional Japanese washi paper. It's lightly sticky, hand-tearable, repositionable on most surfaces and available in hundreds of patterns and widths. When choosing a set, the most important factors are width, roll count, theme coherence and paper quality. This guide covers everything you need — whether you're buying for journaling, scrapbooking, planning, gift wrapping or giving as a creative gift.

✦ What Is Washi Tape?

Washi tape originated in Japan, made from natural fibers including bamboo, hemp, rice and the bark of the gampi plant. The word "washi" simply means Japanese paper. Unlike regular tape, washi has a semi-transparent, slightly textured finish that takes ink and colour exceptionally well — which is why it became popular for decorative use.

Today it comes in everything from simple solid colours to intricate gold foil patterns, vintage illustrations, floral prints and art-inspired motifs. Journalers, scrapbookers, planner decorators, gift wrappers, teachers and crafters of all levels use it.

What makes washi tape different

  • Repositionable: Peel off and re-stick on most paper surfaces without tearing or leaving residue.
  • Hand-tearable: No scissors needed — tear cleanly by hand for a natural, textured edge.
  • Writable: Write on it with most pens, pencils and markers.
  • Layerable: Stack it over itself or other elements to build depth in a spread.
  • Semi-transparent: Many tapes let underlying content show through lightly.

New to washi tape? Start with a themed set of 10–20 rolls. Themed sets are curated so every pattern and colour in the set coordinates — you don't have to worry about whether things go together.

✦ Width Guide

Width is the single most important spec to understand before buying.

Width Best For Common Use
5mm Fine details, thin accents Bullet journal dividers, thin borders, underlining text
10mm Versatile detail work Page borders, tab labels, scrapbook accents
15mm Most popular all-purpose width Journal spreads, planner decoration, gift wrapping, borders
25mm Bolder decoration, pattern display Scrapbook headers, wide borders, gift tags
30mm Statement pieces, large patterns Scrapbook backgrounds, wide headers, decorative panels
75mm Large-format decoration Full-width journal spreads, scrapbook page backgrounds

Buying tip: Sets that include multiple widths — say, 10mm, 15mm and 25mm — give you far more creative flexibility than buying single-width rolls. Most IEEBEE sets are built with this mix in mind.

✦ How Many Rolls Do You Need?

Roll Count Best For Notes
10–20 rolls Beginners, single-theme projects, gifts Easy to coordinate. Good starting point for journalers and planner users.
24–30 rolls Regular crafters, scrapbookers More pattern variety. Enough for full spreads with layering and accents.
37–48 rolls Active journalers, planner enthusiasts Great for multi-page projects and longer creative sessions.
60+ rolls Teachers, classroom use, workshops Maximum variety. Best for group projects or donation programs.

Roll length note: Most IEEBEE rolls are 3 meters (9.84 feet) long. Some rolls in select sets are 4 meters (13.1 feet). Check the product listing if roll length matters for your project.

✦ Choosing a Theme

A good theme set does the colour coordination work for you — every roll in the set is designed to work together.

✦ What to Look for in Quality

Paper

Premium washi tape uses genuine Japanese washi paper — lightweight, slightly textured, durable enough to hold gold foil stamping without cracking. Lower-quality tape uses thinner paper that may tear unevenly or leave adhesive residue.

Adhesive

Good washi tape is lightly adhesive — strong enough to hold in place, gentle enough to peel without tearing journal pages. If it leaves residue or rips paper when removed, the adhesive is too strong for decorative use.

Print definition

Detailed patterns — especially small motifs like stars or flowers — should be crisp and readable even at narrow widths. Gold foil should be even and reflective, not patchy.

Child safety

For classroom use or children's crafts, check that the tape is made without phthalates and lead. IEEBEE washi tapes are manufactured without these materials and are regularly tested.

✦ FAQ

What is washi tape made from?
Traditional washi tape is made from Japanese washi paper, produced from natural plant fibers including bamboo, hemp, rice and the bark of the gampi plant. IEEBEE washi tapes use traditional Japanese washi paper as the base, with gold foil stamping on selected designs. All products are manufactured without phthalates and lead.
Is washi tape removable?
Yes — washi tape is repositionable on most paper and smooth surfaces. It can be peeled off carefully without tearing standard journal paper and repositioned. For delicate paper, peel slowly from one end at a low angle and test a small piece first.
What width should a beginner start with?
15mm is the most versatile width and the best starting point. A set that also includes 10mm and 25mm gives you a good range without being overwhelming.

Most IEEBEE rolls are 3 meters long. For typical journaling use — borders, accents and decorative strips — one 15mm roll lasts roughly 15–25 journal pages depending on how much you use per page.
Is washi tape safe for children?
IEEBEE washi tapes are manufactured without phthalates and lead and are suitable for children's craft projects and classroom use. They require no scissors (hand-tearable) and no glue.
