Washi tape comes in widths from 5mm to 75mm and roll lengths of 3–4 meters. It's made from Japanese washi paper — a natural-fiber paper that's lightweight, semi-transparent and hand-tearable. Width is the most important spec to understand before buying. Different widths serve completely different purposes.
Fine Detail — Accents and Dividers
The narrowest commonly available width. Used for fine underlining, thin divider lines in bullet journals and delicate accent strips alongside wider tape. Requires steady application — easier along a ruler edge. Not suitable as a standalone decorative element.
Narrow Accent
Slightly wider than 5mm, offering a bit more pattern visibility. Good for tab labels, accent lines and narrow border details. Used in select IEEBEE sets alongside 15mm rolls as a fine-detail complement.
Versatile Narrow — Borders and Labels
One of the most versatile widths. Wide enough to display simple patterns clearly, narrow enough to use as an accent or secondary element. Works well alongside 15mm tape as a layered border, for tab labels in planners and for column dividers.
Most Popular Width — All-Purpose
The standard width for most washi tape use. Fits most journal, planner and scrapbook page formats without dominating the page. Wide enough to display detailed patterns at readable scale. The most frequently included width in multi-roll sets — a good starting point for any new buyer.
Mid-Wide — Statement Strips
Slightly wider than 15mm — the difference is noticeable when used as a header or border. Works well as a primary width where you want more visual impact than 15mm but don't need a full-width statement piece.
Wide — Headers, Photo Borders, Backgrounds
Large enough to use as a standalone decorative element — a header strip, a photo border mat or a background band. Patterns display with full impact at this width, including gold foil details and intricate illustrations. One of the most useful widths to have alongside 15mm.
Statement Width — Large Patterns
A wide, bold strip for scrapbook backgrounds, wide page headers and statement pieces. Large motifs — botanical illustrations, landscape-style patterns, art-inspired designs — display especially well at this width.
Wide Format — Large-Scale Decoration
Present in select IEEBEE sets. Used for large background sections, wide decorative borders and mixed-media projects where you want to cover significant surface area quickly.
Extra Wide — Landscape Panels
Available in select sets. Works well as a landscape-orientation strip across the centre or top of a large-format page. At this width, detailed art-inspired patterns create a near-mural effect on a spread.
Maximum Width — Full-Section Backgrounds
The widest width available in IEEBEE sets. A single strip of 75mm tape covers almost a quarter of a standard A5 journal page. Used for dramatic background elements and artistic spreads where tape is the primary medium rather than an accent.
Width selection tip: The most useful combination for an all-purpose set is 10mm + 15mm + 25mm. These three widths cover accent work, general decoration and statement pieces without too much overlap in function. Most IEEBEE themed sets are built around this principle.

Roll length tells you how much tape is on each individual roll.

What is Japanese washi paper?
Washi (和紙) is a traditional Japanese paper made from the long fibers of plants including bamboo, hemp, rice and the bark of the gampi, kozo and mitsumata plants. These long fibers give washi its characteristic combination of properties:
- Lightweight with high strength — thinner than Western paper but difficult to tear unintentionally
- Semi-transparent — allows underlying content to show through lightly
- Hand-tearable — tears cleanly along the fiber grain when pulled at the right angle
- Ink-receptive — takes most pen, marker and printing ink well, including gold foil stamping
- Slightly textured — gives tape a natural, tactile quality that distinguishes it from plastic-backed tape
Gold foil stamping
Many IEEBEE sets feature gold foil stamping — a process where metallic foil is applied to the paper surface using heat and pressure to create raised, reflective patterns. Gold foil works well on washi paper because the paper's texture holds the foil without cracking. The result is a tape that reflects light and creates dimensional visual interest that standard printing can't achieve.

✦ Adhesive Properties
The adhesive on washi tape is specifically designed to be lighter than standard tape — strong enough to hold in place, but gentle enough to remove without tearing most paper surfaces.
- Repositionable: Can be lifted and repositioned on most paper surfaces within a short period of application without leaving residue
- Non-permanent on most surfaces: Safe for journal and planner pages — peel slowly from one end to avoid tearing
- Long-term bond on rough surfaces: On textured or porous surfaces like kraft paper or cardboard, adhesive grip increases over time
- Temperature sensitive: Heat and direct sunlight can reduce adhesive strength — store tape away from radiators and windowsills
For delicate paper: Press lightly and peel from one end slowly at a low angle. Never apply to wet or damp paper — the adhesive will bond more strongly and may tear the page on removal.
